simarillon (Davide)
Ciao Luis, puoi presentarci Draco Ideas?

Sotto l’etichetta Eclipse Editorial, sarà Skull Tales:A tutta vela!

Qui l’intervista originale in inglese
Hello Luis, can you introduce us to Draco Ideas?
We love thematic board games and historical simulation games. Draco Ideas is a Spanish publishing house born in 2014 with the aim of creating specialized board games, the board games we would like to play, with the quality and care that our customers deserve.
What do you think is your point of strength?
Although we are a young publisher, we have many followers and friends who trust our work and own many of our games. I also believe that maintaining two publishing brands, one of them dedicated to wargames and historical simulation (Draco Ideas) and the other to narrative and thematic games, with Eclipse Editorial, helps us to let players know what to expect from our games.
Is it more difficult to create a game or to localize a game? Is it hard to find the right partners from a lot of the available
It is always harder to create a game from scratch, although there are some localizations that involve a great effort, due to their complexity and length, such as Urban Operations, which exceeds 60,000 words. We take the development of our games very seriously, but we always have to test them and make sure that everything is balanced, in addition to writing the rules and checking for typos and that it is didactic.
What games in your Catalogue would you particularly recommend to our readers and why? “All of them” doesn’t is not a valid answer!
Skull Tales: Full Sail! without a doubt, as a game from Eclipse Editorial. It is a narrative game, a “simulator” of pirate life, in which your character lives a series of adventures throughout the game’s campaigns, with very epic moments and in the company of up to 4 friends.
From the Draco Ideas catalog, I have a special affection, as it is logical, for ONUS! as a game of which I am the author. A battle game with miniatures, without miniatures! It uses cards to show the units, with all the depth of rules of the systems with minis. This series of games keeps growing and will soon be in Russian as well 😊.

What is your best seller? Which game, on the other hand, did not meet expectations?
Definitely Tetrarchia, now in its 4th edition! It is a small bestseller. And another game by the same author, Miguel Márquez, Hispania is also a great success.
Perhaps, in general, it is more difficult for us to reach the general public through direct sales in stores, as there is so much game offer to compete with each new week.
What is the main target audience for your games? What types of players do you want to involve with your game?
Our games tell stories, create a narrative based on what happens at the table, which creates memorable memories of each game. The gaming experience, along with the fun, is the most important thing for us. On the other hand, many of our titles have a learning curve, if not steep, then somewhat demanding. While we also have games that are easy to play, others require more than one game to master.
Outside of your Catalogue, which game would you have liked to produce? And why?
I would like to publish some “definitive” game about El Cid, for example, or the Spanish Tercios between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Japanese Sengoku period is also very epic and lends itself to some innovative title.
There is a renewed interest in wargaming. What do you think is the reason for this new life of wargames, board wargames, and historical-themed games? How does Draco approach all of this?
I think the hobby is growing, in general terms, more and more people are playing board games. Wargames are still a niche sector, so the more board game players, the more the number of wargame players increases. The historical theme is becoming more and more important in board games. Something similar is also happening in movies, series and novels.
At Draco Ideas we have some simple titles, with quick games, that are ideal for getting into the world of wargaming, such as 2GM Tactics, for example, or Tetrarchia, which is a cooperative game.

You are showing a particular interest in History. What has led you to make this choice? Have you identified particular periods of interest?
Without a doubt, Ancient History and the great exploits of generals like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar or Hadrian have aroused my attention since I was a child. But I love almost any historical period. I also like very much the history of the Second World War and medieval times.
The historical board game is in continuous evolution; how do you see these changes and what can we expect for the future?
As you say, there is a continuous evolution. We see better games, with more solid mechanics and better quality components. Also the internet makes it possible to ask a question about a game and have the author answer it in a matter of hours on the BGG, it’s great! I believe that in the future we will see more titles, covering less visited conflicts than the Ardennes or Normandy, with higher and higher quality graphics and materials.
Do you have many projects for the future, what can we expect for 2025?
Draco Ideas starts the year with Castelnuovo 1539, a very interesting proposal about the siege of the city, defended by a Spanish Tercio and surrounded by countless Ottoman Jeninzars.
Under the Eclipse Editorial label, it will be Skull Tales: Full Sail! Our big launch. In its first crowdfunding campaign it had more than 5000 backers, with a record amount for the time and type of project. It is a simulator of pirate life in a fantasy Caribbean, reminiscent of Monkey Island, Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Sails, The Island of Severed Heads and many films and literature…
Do you have any secrets to share with us about the near or distant future of Draco and its games?
We expect to present this year several lines based on ONUS! with different settings, Napoleonic or Japanese Sengoku Jidai.
Can you tell us a funny, nice, or particular fact that marked the production and/or distribution of your games?
We produce our games in China, in factories of our total confidence, with which we maintain a fluid and constant communication. From there they are sent to our warehouse in Spain, from where they are shipped to the rest of the world. Sometimes, situations such as Brexit or problems in the Suez Canal are a real headache for our logistics.
How do you see the future of board games in a rapidly evolving world where digital technology seems to involve every aspect of daily life?
I have always seen a rejection in gamers to the intensive use of technology in board games. I think that rather than augmented reality or virtual reality systems, we will see AI-based “assistants” to help us with game calculations or learning.
What is your personal relationship with Board Games? Are you a player, and if so, what type of player are you? What games do you enjoy playing? Can you reconcile gaming as a hobby/passion and as a profession?
I love narrative board games, very thematic and historical simulation games, especially from Antiquity. With work, I can’t dedicate as much time as I would like to play just for pleasure, but I’m not complaining, I have an exciting job!
One last chance to say what you want to our readers
Support us by becoming a backer of our games! Well, now, seriously speaking, I would ask people to understand and to think twice before posting on social media. Sometimes the objective of a game is lost, it must entertain and transport you to a time and place, real or fictional, where you live a unique experience. The components and qualities of the game help to enhance this experience, but it is not the most important thing.
Thank you for your interest in our work!
Luis
