SPIEL Essen 2026 – Intervista Robin De Cleur

L’edizione in numeri

L’edizione in numeri

DatoSPIEL Essen 2026
Date22–25 ottobre 2026 (44ª edizione)
Visitatori230.000 (220.000 nel 2025), circa 57.500 al giorno in media
Espositori997 da 53 Paesi
Novità2.012

Piccole “chicche” dell’edizione 2026

  • Essen spielt!

L’intervista a Robin De Cleur

Essen Spiel 2026 – Sold Out

Conclusioni

Following an English version of the interview for our international friends!

SPIEL Essen 2026 – Face to face with Robin De Cleur

From October 22 to 25, 2026, Essen hosted the biggest SPIEL ever: 230,000 visitors, all eight halls full for the first time, and over 2,000 new releases on the tables.

A record that raises an uncomfortable question: when space runs out, how do you keep growing?

At Giochi sul Nostro Tavolo, we took that question directly to Robin De Cleur, SPIEL’s communication director, during the fair.

What came out of it was a more candid conversation than expected: from the future of the fair to its relationship with the city, from the excess of new releases to the idea of taking SPIEL outside Germany.

Before handing the floor to Robin, a recap of the numbers and curiosities that made this 44th edition special.

The edition in numbers

SPIEL Essen 2026 closed with 230,000 visitors, 10,000 more than last year’s record, and with sold-out attendance on each of the four days.

FigureSPIEL Essen 2026
DatesOctober 22–25, 2026 (44th edition)

The climb has been steady: after the 93,600 admissions of 2021, held back by restrictions, attendance rose to 204,000 in 2024 (the first sold-out edition) and 220,000 in 2025, which had already surpassed the pre-Covid record of 209,000 in 2019.

In 2025, Hall 7 was added; this year it was Hall 8’s turn, previously used as a waiting area.

Today the fair occupies the entire Messe Essen exhibition grounds and has no more room to expand on site.

Small “gems” of the 2026 edition

  • Essen spielt! For the first time, the fair stepped outside the halls with three game nights in special locations: the 22nd floor of Essen’s city hall, the Red Dot Design Museum in the UNESCO site of Zollverein, and a Weiße Flotte boat on Lake Baldeney.
  • A face for the fair. The 2026 Games Ambassador is the American illustrator Peter Mohrbacher, known for his work on Magic: The Gathering and for Angelarium.

The interview with Robin De Cleur

Let’s move on to the heart of this article, focusing on the words of Robin De Cleur, currently head of SPIEL’s marketing team.

This is not the first time we have met the SPIEL team! We showed Robin our first interview with Carol Rapp at Urbino in gioco (you can read it again HERE).

Let’s start right away with our questions.

1. This year SPIEL occupies all eight halls of Messe Essen for the first time. Size and spaces are now enormous: how do you envision growth in the coming years, with more space, more experiences to enjoy, or a combination of the two? And have you ever wondered whether one day you will need to change venue, as happened in Italy with one of our most important fairs, which moved from Modena to Bologna for reasons of space?

Growing in square meters is practically impossible: the eight halls are already full, and even the conference rooms are almost all occupied.

There is Hall 1A, but it is not suitable for hosting exhibitors, so to expand the fair in size we would have to be truly very creative.
A change of venue is currently not planned at all: we have already said that we want to stay in Essen.

As for growth in experience, I have no doubts: this year we launched Essen spielt with gaming events in the city, we expanded the talk program, and we want to keep improving what Essen offers.

But the heart of the fair must remain the same: letting our visitors play at their best and helping publishers with their new releases.

2. Essen spielt! takes the fair outside the halls for the first time, around the city. How did the idea come about? And what is the relationship with Essen like: does the city take part, both as an organization and as a community of players, and are there no problems with crowding and traffic?

The idea came from the Messe and the city, who came to us saying: “We have some ideas to make SPIEL felt outside the halls too, to be more involved”.

Result was special events, with game nights and dedicated offers, and we gladly supported them, because they allow people to experience gaming outside the halls as well.

The initiative was very well received, so we want to do it again and perhaps expand it, although for now there are no fixed plans: the ideas are always there, but it is a path we will keep working on.

A clarification: neither the city nor the Messe is directly involved in organizing SPIEL, which is run solely by our team of 12 people. We are guests of the halls, which we rent, and we work closely with the Messe, which manages parking, security and services of this kind.

The city is delighted to have us: Essen is not New York, it is not the capital of Germany or even of its region, it is an ordinary city, but it is the home of SPIEL, and it shows: hotels, restaurants and trains are full.

With so many people, especially on Thursday and Friday, queues and traffic sometimes build up, also because the fairgrounds are inside the city, among streets and residential areas.

There are some complaints, but nothing serious: I believe the residents are happy that SPIEL is here.

3. This year there is talk of over 2,000 new releases at the fair. An enormous number, which brings with it higher production costs and higher prices for players. Do you think this quantity could become a bottleneck for the industry and for end customers?

The enormous productivity and creativity of publishers results in a much shorter life cycle for games.

We constantly see new titles arriving, accompanied by the hype of the moment, and it is really difficult in this context to create evergreens.

Whether this is a problem is for the industry and the players to decide. Personally, I think a little less turnover of new releases and a little more attention to replaying could help.

For SPIEL, however, new releases are fundamental: they are what the public comes looking for.

That said, this year we definitely have the highest number of new releases I have ever seen, and a few fewer games would not be a tragedy.

4. The Italian board game market is not huge, but it has grown in recent years. How much weight does Italy have at SPIEL? And how can those who are not in Essen experience the fair through those who report on it?

Italy may not be among the top five countries by number of visitors, but I believe it is at least in the top ten.

A note: your country is definitely strong in role-playing games! As for reporting on the fair, the question to ask is: what would I want to see and hear if I could not be there?

Think of a major sporting event where atmosphere, people and the emotion of those who are there matter. The result alone is not enough.

That is exactly the point of our work: to make sure that those who are not there can feel as if they are in Essen, among the tables and the voices of the fair, at least for a moment.

With the hope of meeting you again next year, in the midst of us.

5. One last curiosity: SPIEL has always had an international dimension, but for now it is a German event. Do you think side events or initiatives could arise in the future in other countries, taking the SPIEL brand beyond Germany?

It is an interesting idea, one we might perhaps evaluate: at the moment I don’t know where we will go.

We have shown that we are very passionate and creative, and if we find that going outside Germany makes sense, it could be something to explore.

But at the moment there are no fixed plans, nothing concrete.

I always say that ideas are for thinking about and perhaps trying out, or perhaps not: I will take it with me and we will see where it leads us. It is a wonderful question, a good idea!

Conclusion

SPIEL Essen 2026 leaves us with certainties: the fair has reached the physical limit of its space and, for this reason, will grow above all in experience, inside the halls and, as Essen spielt has shown, outside them as well.

The future remains in Essen, with a few ideas still to mature, including that of taking the SPIEL brand beyond German borders.

The challenge remains of a market that produces more games than can be played in depth: according to Robin, a little less turnover and more replayability would benefit the industry, even though new releases remain the engine of events like this.

For us, and for you reading us from Italy, the task is simple: to keep telling the story of the atmosphere and the voices of those who are in Essen. See you at the next SPIEL!

P.S. How many of you would like to see SPIEL in Italy? Asking costs nothing!
